Frequently Asked Questions

At RMC Mechanical, we have been serving Chicago and the surrounding areas since 1933. In that time, we have fielded a wide range of questions from our commercial HVAC customers, with some more common than others. This page will answer the ones that are the most popular and frequently asked.

What types of commercial HVAC equipment do you install?

We install boilers, furnaces, chillers, rooftop HVAC units, split systems, heat pumps, computer room HVAC systems, and more. Plus, as a design-build company, we can handle the entire process, from design, sizing, and equipment selection to installation, piping, and electrical.

How long does a commercial boiler last?

With proper maintenance, you can expect anywhere from 20 to 25 years from a commercial boiler, or longer with procedures like retubing and burner retrofits.

What causes water leaks in a boiler?

Manufacturing defects, corrosion, and metal fatigue from expansion and contraction can all cause internal leaks in a boiler. Many leaks can be repaired through retubing or welding.

When will an air conditioner need to be replaced?

Most commercial air conditioners will last 12 to 15 years, though many will last longer with impeccable maintenance. Improvements in technology and efficiency may make an early upgrade a cost-effective option, however.

What is the difference between an air conditioner and a heat pump?

An air conditioner absorbs heat inside the building and releases it outside to cool the interior. A heat pump can provide both heating and cooling by reversing the refrigerant flow. In cooling mode, a heat pump acts similar to an air conditioner, but in heating mode, it absorbs heat from the outside air and brings it indoors.

Why choose a chiller for cooling instead of an air conditioner?

Chillers are more flexible, can cool larger spaces, and require no ductwork. From a central location, cool water can be piped throughout the building, using air handlers or fan coils in each room to provide cooling. They work especially well in conjunction with boilers for heating. Air conditioners are more cost-effective, especially for smaller spaces.

How often should commercial HVAC equipment be serviced?

At RMC Mechanical, we recommend full-service visits once a year. With our cost-effective preventative maintenance programs, you can be sure your heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment is protected and receives all recommended maintenance.

What are the benefits of routine maintenance?

Preventative maintenance can help you avoid HVAC breakdowns, unnecessary repairs, and inconvenient service calls while minimizing energy usage and extending the life of your equipment.

What is makeup air?

Makeup air is fresh air that is drawn into the building through the HVAC system or a dedicated makeup air unit to replace air removed by the exhaust system.

What is air balancing?

When the volume of air exhausted from the building equals that of the makeup air coming in, the HVAC system is balanced. This eliminates negative pressure that can draw in contaminants or positive pressure that can expel conditioned air, increasing energy costs.

What can cause high temperatures in a walk-in cooler?

In most cases, high temperatures in a walk-in are caused by too much hot food added at once, a door that is opened too often, bad door seals, a faulty temperature controller, or faulty evaporator fans.
